FAQ

Q: Are you a Vanity Press?

A: Not really.  Vanity Presses have a long history of being book publishers without an editorial position. That is us to the ‘T’. Traditional Publishers tend to “mettle,” or tell you what to write. We won’t do that unless you want us to do that. We can provide feedback and tell you how we think your work will appeal to audiences, but the content is ultimately up to you.

Additionally, in the internet age, Vanity Press have taken on a more sinister connotation as something that takes the rights or royalties of your work.  We do NOT take any rights, interest, or royalties in your work. We charge a flat fee for our work and that is it. You retain all creative control and licensing. The only caveat to this is we may use your work as promotion for our services, because we feel this helps to both market you and ourselves. However, if you are opposed to this or have questions, we would be more than happy to discuss in greater detail.

Q: What is your Royalty Percent?

A: We don’t take a royalty. A royalty is the traditional way publishers and authors would do business where a publisher would pay the author a percentage of every book sold by the publisher and it generally was never more than 20%, with the publisher receiving the remainder. At Basenji Studio, we feel this business model is out-of-date and has worked to essentially limit the main stream media. We also believe that the driving engine in this business should be the author/artist, not the publisher.

Q: Are you a printer?

A: No. But we will provide you everything you need to set your book up so that it can be printed by LuLu, Amazon, or any other On-Demand Printshop.

Q: Do you put Digital Rights Management (DRM) as part of your process?

A: Yes and No. No, because we do not put any extra DRM into your work. The files we give you will be DRM free. Yes, because most e-book retailers, will put in DRM as part of their store. If you want more information, please feel free to email us.

Q: Why do I need you?

A: Good question.

Short answer: Because we will prepare your project in a professional manner and get your final project ready-to-sell.

Long answer: Projects like yours are often passion projects, something that you are doing on the side while working and spending time with friends and family. You want to start to monetize your creative endeavor, but to do that you need a “professional” product. However, if you spend time polishing your product, then you are not creating or spending time on your life's priorities. Let’s be honest, you probably don’t enjoy spending time polishing your product. It can be overwhelming, especially for projects you have already invested so much time in. It is a dilemma. We solve the dilemma by polishing and packaging your work, helping you take it to the level you always dreamed it could go. We help your work reach its greatest potential and we find that fact very rewarding. This way you can spend the time focusing the things you love, and we spend time doing the things we love, editing and layout.

Q: Are you literary agents?

A: No.

Q: I have received your bid, now what?

A: Well, do you like it? If yes, let us know and we will work out a payment schedule for each milestone. Send us a down payment and we’ll get to work. If no, let us know and we will work to address your concerns. After all, we want you to be happy.

Q: What does the average timeline look like to complete a project?

A: That depends entirely on the project. Some projects we can probably finish in a few days and other projects may take a few months. It all depends on what you want us to do.

Q: Why a Basenji as a mascot? Don’t they just tear things up?

A: Technically, that is two questions, but, we’ll let it slide. We chose a Basenji as a mascot because they are uniquely loyal, tenacious, and hard working. They get the job done. Plus, they are so cute and they aren’t really that destructive.
